A San Francisco Bay Area firm has unveiled an app created for individuals with acne that connects patients with doctors and a treatment plan and will be offering a glimpse into the emerging market of telemedicine.
The Spruce Health app, released into the public, steps patients through an initial “exam” as any patient would at a typical doctor’s office.
Patients take photos of the skin and answer pre-programmed questions just like those they might get at a dermatologists office.
After stepping through this system, a board-certified dermatologist reviews the facts and sends the individual a personalized treatment plan which includes a prescription provided for the patient’s preferred pharmacy.
Patients also can access a library of data linked to acne and skin care, and send follow-up questions to their assigned dermatologist through the app.
Spruce says it intends to roll out its telemedicine platform to take care of other conditions in the foreseeable future, however, it has not yet specified which conditions.
Telemedicine, making use of technology to provide medical care from a distance, is anticipated to become known with the increased adoption of wearable tech devices that monitor body systems.
The app is free but a virtual consultation with a dermatologist costs $40 and certainly will be paid with credit cards or flexible spending account card. Currently, it is only available to patients in California, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania.
